Introduction

When people start using your reportsā€Šā€”ā€Šlike reallyĀ using themā€Šā€”ā€Šthey don’t end up with fewer questions… they end up with more. šŸ˜…

That’s actually a good thing. It means your dashboards are doing their jobā€Šā€”ā€Šsparking curiosity and deeper analysis. But it also means users will often ask for ā€œjust one more visualā€ or ā€œa slightly different view.ā€

That’s where a Visual ExplorerĀ comes in. Here is a quick demo of what it looks like in action šŸ˜Ž:Ā

Instead of creating dozens of near-identical pages, you can give users the freedom to customize their viewā€Šā€”ā€Šchoosing what metricĀ they want to analyze and howĀ they want to visualize it (bar, line, table, etc.). It’s like giving them their own mini reporting sandbox, right inside Power BI.

In many of my client projectsā€Šā€”ā€Šespecially those with heavy report usageā€Šā€”ā€ŠI love building these ā€œexplorationā€ sections. They empower users to investigate their own questions, discover new insights, and even build visuals they can reuse for presentations or meetings.

And the best part? The more they can explore on their own, the fewer ad hoc requests you’ll get, freeing up your time šŸ˜….Ā

In this tutorial, I’ll show you exactly how to build your own Visual Explorerā€Šā€”ā€Šstep by step.
